Ms Hisae Kato is a researcher at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, with over two decades of experience in international development, policy, and research in active and post-conflict regions of Africa and the Middle East. Her regional focus is on the Kordofan region of Sudan. She holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MPhil from the University of Sussex.
Her research interests center on post-war labour dynamics, peacetime violence, socio-economic reconstruction in post-conflict settings, workplace violence, women's work, and migration. She explores themes such as disarmament/demobilization/reintegration (DDR), water/sanitation infrastructure, and violent extremism prevention. Her doctoral thesis investigated 'The meanings and experiences of work in South Kordofan, Sudan,' supervised by Prof. Zoë Marriage, Dr. Tania Kaiser, and Prof. Christopher Cramer.
