Sally Sharif is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Faculty of Arts. She holds a PhD from the City University of New York (2021) and previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on state-society relations during and after war, emphasizing peacebuilding, post-conflict state consolidation, and disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs. Her work employs mixed methods including natural experiments, machine learning, and qualitative case studies, particularly analyzing ex-combatants from Colombia's FARC.
Dr. Sharif's research has been published in journals such as International Peacekeeping, Political Violence and Terrorism, and Human Rights Quarterly, alongside policy outlets like The Washington Post and the Peace Accords Matrix Policy Brief Series. She has received prestigious awards including the APSA First Generation Scholar Award (2022) and the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (2023).
Her doctoral dissertation and book project analyze DDR programs across macro, meso, and micro levels, linking these to rebel cohesion and post-conflict political bargaining. She emphasizes how these processes shape peace prospects, drawing on original datasets and fieldwork in Colombia. Her policy-focused work addresses challenges in conflict recurrence prevention and sustainable peacebuilding strategies.
In teaching, she instructs courses on comparative politics, international conflict management, and quantitative methods at UBC. Her research and policy contributions bridge academic rigor with real-world conflict resolution challenges, particularly in Latin America and other post-conflict regions.
