Hisae Fujiwara is an Assistant Professor of Japanese and Director of the Japanese Language Program at Brandeis University. She also serves as the Undergraduate Advising Head for the Japanese Language Program. Her research focuses on vocabulary acquisition, kanji learning strategies for alphabet-language learners, and content-based instruction in Japanese as a foreign language.
Dr. Fujiwara holds a PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University and MA degrees from the University of Iowa. She teaches courses such as Beginning and Continuing Japanese, Readings in Contemporary and Modern Japanese Literature, and Experiential Learning Practicum. She is affiliated with the East Asian Studies Program and the Watanabe Scholars initiative.
Her work emphasizes pedagogical innovations to enhance language proficiency and cultural understanding. She contributes to academic discourse through reviews, such as her analysis of "Nihongo o Oshieru: Kotoba wa Sekai wo Hirogeru" in the Journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese.
