Hiroya Miura is an Associate Professor of Music at Bates College, where he teaches composition and directs the College Orchestra. A native of Sendai, Japan, he is a globally recognized composer and performer, celebrated for works that blend contemporary and traditional influences. His compositions, described as 'acidic and tactile,' have been performed by ensembles such as Speculum Musicae, New York New Music Ensemble, and members of Reigakusha (Tokyo-based gagaku ensemble). Notable works include the micro-opera Sharaku Unframed and the shakuhachi concerto Galactic Monarchs.
He holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in composition from Columbia University and serves on the Advisory Board for the Composers Conference and as Artistic Director of Columbia University’s IMJS/Japanese Cultural Heritage Initiatives. His research interests span composition, music theory, contemporary performance practice, and Japanese court music.
Miura is a founding member of the electronic improvisation unit No One Receiving, whose debut album received acclaim in Europe and the U.S. His residencies include the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, la Napoule Art Foundation, and Willapa Bay AiR.
