Hillel David Soifer is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in Comparative Politics and research methods. His work focuses on state building in Latin America, historical political development, and methodological challenges in qualitative research. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (2006) and prior faculty positions at Bates College and Temple University.
His research explores state capacity trajectories, subnational comparisons, and the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP). Notable publications include State Building in Latin America (2015) and edited volumes like Politics After Violence (2019). His methodological contributions address critical junctures, shadow cases, and spatial aggregate unit analysis.
