Hilkka Hiiop is the Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts (since 2025), holding a Professorship in Cultural Heritage Conservation since 2017. Previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Art and Culture (2021–2025) and Associate Professor (2013–2017). She earned her PhD (2012) and MA (2004) from the Estonian Academy of Arts, focusing on contemporary art conservation strategies.
Her career spans roles as Head of the Painting Conservation Studio (2003–2012) and conservation specialist at the Art Museum of Estonia. Specializes in medieval to modern art conservation, with notable projects like the Rode Altarpiece restoration (Europa Nostra Award 2017) and Christian Ackermann’s Baroque altar (State Cultural Prize 2025).
Over 120 publications and supervision of 20+ dissertations. Awards include the Order of the White Star (2022) and multiple heritage conservation prizes. Key research interests include interdisciplinary heritage management, analytical chemistry in art investigation, and digital documentation of cultural artifacts.
