Hildegard F. Glass is an Associate Professor of German and Director of German Studies in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She joined the university in 1991 and has served as department chair since 2009 while leading the German program.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Texas at Austin
- M.A. in German Literature and American Studies from Freie University Berlin, Germany
Dr. Glass specializes in German literary and cultural history from the late 19th century to contemporary periods, with focused research on Holocaust representations in literature and visual arts, modernity's relationship to urban environments, and early 20th-century utopian/science fiction narratives. Her scholarly work extends to German avant-garde literary movements, examining how imaginary cities reflect societal transformations.
She has significantly shaped academic programming through advisory roles for the World Cultures and Literatures undergraduate program, Jewish Studies minor, and interdisciplinary World Cities minor in the College of Architecture.
