Hilco van Elten is an Associate Professor at the Department of Accounting, School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and serves as Program Director for the Certified Public Controllers program at the Zijlstra Center. He holds a visiting Research Fellow position at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management, where he supervises PhD students and contributes to accounting research and education. His research focuses on Management Accounting & Control in healthcare organizations, particularly exploring performance measurement systems, trust dynamics, cost accounting methodologies, and their applications in healthcare.
Van Elten earned his PhD in Management Accounting & Control from Nyenrode Business University (completed 2012). His work spans interdisciplinary journals in accounting and healthcare management, including British Accounting Review and Journal of Medical Internet Research. He actively engages in ancillary roles such as board member at Living Hope (Putten) and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to healthcare.
His recent articles emphasize value-based healthcare, cost analysis in healthcare pathways, and big data innovations. Notable contributions include studies on performance dashboarding, reimbursement linkages with prevention, and cost estimation methodologies. He received the AAA Behavioral Research in Accounting Best Paper Award in 2018.
