Hilary Strang

Hilary Strang is a Senior Lecturer in the College and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of English and Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at the University of Chicago. She serves as the director of MAPH (Master of Arts Program in the Humanities) and has worked full-time for MAPH since 2009, initially as a preceptor during her Ph.D. studies in English at the University of Chicago.

Research Interests: Her work focuses on science fiction as a lens to explore collective life beyond capitalism, with particular emphasis on feminist utopian SF of the 1970s, environmental and ecological SF, and Marxist/communist theory. Recent courses examine themes like the 'more-than-human' in SF (e.g., rocks, plants, nuclear waste) and SF narratives imagining life without the state, police, or capitalism.

Teaching and Community Engagement: She co-hosts a podcast on Kim Stanley Robinson’s novels and utopias, and teaches literature and theory in the free, community-oriented Odyssey Project. She is also a member of the non-hierarchical teaching collective Clearing School.
