Hilary Chappell

Hilary Chappell is a Chair Professor in Linguistic Typology of East Asian Languages at EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales), Paris, since 2005. She previously held academic positions at La Trobe University (Australia) and has served as Director/Deputy Director of the CRLAO research center (2006-2008).

• Education: PhD in Linguistics (1984, Australian National University)
• Research Focus: Typology, diachronic syntax, grammaticalization, and language contact in Sinitic languages.

Her ERC-funded SINOTYPE project (2009-2013) produced 44 major publications, including the Diversity in Sinitic languages (OUP, 2015) and a grammar series with De Gruyter. She has supervised multiple doctorates and conducted extensive fieldwork on Xianghua and other Sinitic languages in China.

Her teaching includes seminars on areal typology of East Asia (2019-2020), diachronic syntax of Southern Min (2018), and fieldwork methodologies (2016-2017). She has served on editorial boards of Journal of Chinese Linguistics and Linguistic Typology, and organized major conferences like JLAO and ParisLCNC.
