Hilary Sandler serves as an Extension Professor and Adjunct Faculty member specializing in Integrated Pest Management and Weed Science at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she also directs the UMass Cranberry Station in East Wareham, MA.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Plant and Soil Sciences from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (2004), an M.S. in Plant Science from the University of Delaware (1983), and a B.A. in Biology/Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania (1981).
Dr. Sandler's research focuses on crop-weed ecology dynamics within cranberry production systems, emphasizing nonchemical pest management strategies. She investigates vine establishment, weed colonization, fertilizer management, and innovative techniques like hand-held flame cultivation for controlling perennial weeds and dodder. Her extension work directly supports cranberry growers through evidence-based agricultural solutions.
As Director of the UMass Cranberry Station, she oversees critical field research and outreach initiatives for the cranberry industry. Although not currently accepting new students, her leadership shapes sustainable practices for Massachusetts growers through applied science and extension services.
