Hilary Nixon is the Deputy Executive Director at the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San José State University (SJSU), where she oversees MTI’s research program and teaches in the Master of Science in Transportation Management program. She holds a Ph.D. in Planning, Policy & Design from the University of California Irvine, an M.A. in International Business from National University, and a B.A. in Environmental Management from the University of Rochester.
Her research focuses on transportation and environmental planning, pro-environmental behavior, and transportation finance. Notable contributions include studies on federal transportation tax policies, sustainable urban planning, and women’s representation in transportation fields. She has published extensively in journals like Transportation Research Record, Journal of Environmental Management, and Journal of Public Transportation, and her work has been featured in media outlets such as the Washington Post and CityLab.
Dr. Nixon has received multiple awards, including the Outstanding Advisor Award (2009) and the Academic Excellence Award from the American Planning Association. She has held leadership roles at SJSU, including Chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Graduate Program Director. Her professional service includes roles with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), the California Planning Foundation, and the Transportation Research Board’s AME20 Standing Committee on Women and Gender in Transportation.
Her teaching spans environmental planning, urban policy, and community engagement, with a focus on experiential learning through programs like CommUniverCity San José. She has secured over $2 million in grants for research projects addressing transportation equity, sustainability, and policy effectiveness.
