Dr. Hilary Jones is Associate Professor of History and African American & Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky, where she also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. Her research examines West African urban communities and their transnational connections during the colonial period, with particular focus on identity formation at the intersection of race, class, and empire. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Senegal, Martinique, and Guadeloupe supported by Fulbright and NEH fellowships.
Her teaching portfolio includes: Introduction to African Studies, African Diaspora studies, Precolonial African History, and advanced seminars on gender in colonial contexts. Current research investigates stranger communities in French West Africa through case studies of Lebanese immigrants, Garveyite movements, and Caribbean colonial officials.
