Professor Hilary Hinds is a faculty member in the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She holds a full-time position as a Professor and has been affiliated with Lancaster since 2000. Her research focuses on early modern radical religious writing, with a particular emphasis on early Quakerism and women’s contributions to radical sects of the 17th century. Notable publications include George Fox and Early Quaker Culture (2011) and A Cultural History of Twin Beds (2019), funded by a Wellcome Trust fellowship.
Her current project explores the spatial networks of early Quakerism in North-West England (1652–1653), collaborating with Lancaster colleagues. Additional research interests include middlebrow literature and material culture, as seen in her study of twin beds’ sociohistorical significance. She has supervised PhDs on topics ranging from gender and sexuality in literature to 17th-century sectarian writing.
Professor Hinds has held visiting fellowships at institutions including Mount Holyoke College (USA), University of British Columbia (Canada), and University College Dublin (Ireland). She contributes to research groups such as the Centre for Gender Studies and Literature and Religion.
