Hilal SURAT is an Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Faculty of Art and Design, Artvin Coruh University, Turkey. She has served in academic positions at the university since 2006, progressing from Research Assistant to Assistant Professor and currently Associate Professor since 2019. Her career demonstrates a strong commitment to landscape architecture education and research with significant contributions to environmental planning and sustainable design practices in the Eastern Black Sea region.
Dr. SURAT completed her academic journey at Atatürk University, earning her undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture (1997-2001), followed by a Master's (2002-2006) and Ph.D. (2006-2011) in the same field. She has held numerous administrative roles including Vice Dean, Erasmus Coordinator, Farabi Coordinator, Bologna Coordinator, and Department Vice Chair, demonstrating leadership beyond her academic responsibilities.
Her research interests span sustainable landscape planning, ecotourism development, plant ecology in urban environments, and environmental restoration. She has conducted extensive studies on protected areas management, urban green spaces, and the application of native plants in landscape design. Her work addresses critical environmental challenges including heavy metal remediation using flora, sustainable urban development, and cultural ecosystem services provided by natural areas. Dr. SURAT's publication record shows a strong emphasis on practical applications of landscape architecture to address regional environmental challenges, with recent work exploring energy-efficient landscape planning, waste material reuse in design, and pollination-supporting native plants for urban landscapes.
Dr. SURAT's recent publications (2021-2023) reveal a growing focus on climate-responsive design solutions, sustainable material use in landscapes, and the integration of ecological principles into urban planning. Her research increasingly addresses the intersection of environmental conservation and community needs, particularly in protected areas management and ecotourism development in Turkey's Eastern Black Sea region. The collaborative nature of her work is evident through frequent co-authorship with colleagues Banu Karaşah, Derya Sari, and Emine Tarakcı Eren.
