Hideaki Miyajima is a Professor at the School of Commerce, Waseda University, where he has served since 1995. He currently holds multiple leadership positions including Executive Director of Waseda University (since 2018) and Advisor to the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study (since 2018). With a Doctor of Commerce from Waseda University, Miyajima has established himself as a leading scholar in Japanese economic history and corporate governance.
Miyajima's research primarily focuses on Japanese Economic History, Corporate Governance, Corporate Finance, and Mergers and Acquisitions. His work examines the historical evolution of Japan's corporate governance system, particularly the transformation of cross-shareholding structures, the role of institutional investors, and the impact of governance reforms on corporate performance. His recent work has increasingly focused on purpose-driven management ("Purpose Management") and the development of Japan's "Model 2.0" corporate governance framework that balances stakeholder interests with traditional Japanese business practices.
His extensive publication record shows a clear trajectory from historical studies of pre-war Japanese business groups (zaibatsu) to contemporary analyses of corporate governance reforms in post-bubble Japan. The 15 most recent articles demonstrate his ongoing focus on ownership structure transformation, board governance, ESG performance, and the evolving relationship between institutional investors and Japanese corporations. His research consistently bridges historical perspective with current policy debates, particularly regarding the effectiveness of Japan's Corporate Governance Code and Stewardship Code.
