Hetty Blades is an Associate Professor at Coventry University's Research Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE). Her research focuses on the intersection of dance, digital technologies, and human rights, particularly regarding disability and marginalized communities. She leads the AHRC-funded 'Moving Online: Ontology and Ownership of Internet Dance' project (2022-24) and co-leads initiatives in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Nigeria addressing disability rights and livelihood recovery for displaced persons.
She holds a PhD from Coventry University (2015), an MA from Roehampton University (2010), and a BA from Trinity Laban (2007). Her work spans digital dance documentation, legal frameworks for artistic expression, and participatory research methodologies. Blades has contributed to EU-funded projects like Europeana Space and was a Researcher in Residence at the Digital Catapult (2016).
Her research outputs explore ontology of dance scores, digital heritage, and socio-political impacts of dance practices. Awards include the British Society of Aesthetics Small Grant (2016) and Coventry University’s Ede and Ravenscroft Award for Academic Excellence (2014).
Blades collaborates internationally on projects blending arts and advocacy, such as 'Performing/Informing Rights' which uses dance to educate disabled communities on human rights. She also co-directs the CoDA research training program in Flanders, fostering interdisciplinary dance studies.
