Herrmann Föttinger (1877–1945) was the first professor of fluid physics and a pioneering academic in engineering and natural sciences. He held professorships at Königlich Technische Hochschule Danzig (1909–1924) and Technische Hochschule Berlin (from 1924), where he established the Institute of Fluid Mechanics. His work focused on fluid dynamics, ship propulsion, and interdisciplinary engineering.
- Education: Technical University of Munich (Diploma 1899, Dr. Eng. 1909)
- Research Contributions: Developed the Föttinger Transformer (fluid coupling system for steam turbines), vortex theory of screw propellers, and the rail zeppelin with Franz Kruckenberg
His research emphasized practical applications of fluid mechanics in maritime and aerospace engineering. Föttinger warned against over-specialization, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches. He passed away in 1945 during World War II.
