Hermine Mkrtchyan

Professor Hermine Mkrtchyan is a Professor of Microbiology and Head of Research in the School of Medicine and Biosciences at the University of West London. Her work focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health framework, integrating laboratory research with policy implementation. She leads the Microbiomes, Environment and Health research group, studying interactions between human/livestock/environmental microbiomes and AMR transmission dynamics. Her research employs whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, and cutting-edge technologies like nanopore sequencing and Raman spectroscopy to combat AMR.

Research Themes include:

• Climate change impacts on microbial diversity
• Food safety via genomic methods
• Indoor air microbiome analysis

Her group collaborates on projects like low-emission feed trials, COPD antibiotic reduction strategies, and rapid diagnostic platforms. She supervises multiple PhD students and teaches Medical Microbiology and Clinical Infection Control courses.
