Herman Wright Cappelen is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo and holds a part-time professorship at the University of St Andrews. He has a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford and a PhD in Philosophy from UC Berkeley.

His research spans all areas of systematic philosophy, focusing on semantic minimalism, speech act pluralism, conceptual engineering, and the critique of philosophical intuitions. Current projects include exploring the difficulties of conceptual engineering and the methodology of philosophy.
Recent publications emphasize conceptual engineering challenges, meta-semantic frameworks, and the limitations of experimental philosophy. His work systematically re-examines foundational assumptions about language, knowledge, and philosophical practice.

He has directed the Linguistic Agency component of CSMN (2007-2017) and led the Arche Philosophical Research Centre at St Andrews for 4 years. His editorial work includes co-editing Oxford Handbook of Philosophical Methodology and upcoming volumes on Conceptual Engineering.
