Herman Cousy is a full-time Professor at the University of Leuven (K.U.Leuven), where he has taught commercial law, insurance law, and European insurance law since 1982. He serves as Director of the Centre for Risk and Insurance Studies (CRIS) and has held teaching assignments at various foreign universities.

He has received prestigious honors including membership in the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts, Academia Europaea, and the International Academy of Comparative Law.
Additional roles include serving as an Assessor at the Belgian Council of State (Raad van State) since 1997 and as a Member of the "Conseil de Surveillance" of the Belgian Commission bancaire, financière et des assurances/Comissie voor het bank-, financie- en assurantiewezen (CBFA) since 2004.
