Herman B. (Dutch) Leonard is the George F. Baker Jr. Professor of Public Management at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) and the Eliot I. Snider and Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School (HBS). He holds dual roles, cochairing the Social Enterprise Initiative at HBS. His expertise spans leadership, organizational strategy, crisis management, and financial management. He earned his PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 1979.
Leonard’s research focuses on crisis management, corporate social responsibility, and performance management. He has served on multiple boards, including Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the ACLU of Massachusetts, and the Hitachi Foundation. He has also contributed to public policy through roles on state councils and task forces, such as the Massachusetts Governor’s Task Force on Tuition Prepayment Plans.
He teaches executive education programs like Crisis Leadership in Higher Education and Leadership in Crises, addressing crisis management strategies for leaders in public and private sectors. His affiliations include the Ash Center, Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, and Taubman Center for State and Local Government at HKS.
Outside academia, Leonard engages in professional activities such as board memberships with the American Repertory Theater and Tzu Chi, and consulting for organizations like the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His interests include skiing, guitar, hiking, and wildlife.
