Prof. Dr. Herbert Popp is a Professor at the University of Bayreuth, specializing in cultural heritage and tourism dynamics in North Africa. In Winter Semester 2011/2012, he delivered a lecture at the Zentrum für Interkulturelle Studien (ZIS) titled "Collective granaries in southern Tunisia and southern Morocco between decay, preservation as cultural heritage and emerging cultural tourism." His work explores the historical function of storage fortresses (ksar in Tunisia and agadir in Morocco), their current structural decline, and their revalorization through cultural heritage preservation and tourism.
Research interests include
- Cultural heritage management
- Traditional agricultural systems in arid regions
- Heritage tourism
- Material culture of the Sahara's fringe zones
His 2012 study compared southern Tunisia and Morocco's Anti-Atlas region, analyzing how local/global preservation movements and tourism industries are reshaping perceptions of these photogenic structures. The lecture highlighted tensions between decay, heritage conservation, and commercialization trends.
