Herbert H. Paper (1925-2012) was a distinguished academic and linguist, renowned for his expertise in Yiddish, Near Eastern languages, and ancient texts. He held professorial roles at the University of Michigan (1943-1977) and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR, Cincinnati) where he served as Dean of Graduate Studies from 1977 to 2000. At the University of Michigan, he pioneered Yiddish courses and co-founded the Jewish Studies program. At HUC-JIR, he expanded linguistic offerings, introducing Yiddish, Sanskrit, and modern Farsi while advancing the college's academic reputation.
Education: B.A. in Classics from the University of Colorado (1943), Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute (1952). Postdoctoral work included a Fulbright Scholarship in Iran (1952-1953) for translating Elamite texts. Research interests spanned ancient languages, Jewish cultural preservation, and pedagogical innovation in linguistics.
Service: Editor of the Hebrew Union College Annual, founding president of the Association of Judaic Studies. His legacy includes shaping academic programs that produced influential scholars and religious leaders. Collections of his papers are archived at the American Jewish Archives, documenting his correspondence, course materials, and contributions to Jewish and linguistic scholarship.
