Herbert G. Winful, the Joseph E. and Anne P. Rowe Professor of Electrical Engineering and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, is a distinguished researcher and educator with over 130 journal publications and significant contributions to nonlinear optics, quantum tunneling, and laser dynamics. Since joining the faculty in 1987, he has held leadership roles in diversity initiatives, including founding the Committee for an Inclusive Department and directing the MI-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation.
- Key research areas: nonlinear fiber optics, photonic crystals, ultrafast optics, quantum tunneling, laser arrays
His work resolving the Hartman effect paradox in quantum tunneling and discovering synchronized chaos in laser arrays has earned him fellowships from IEEE, American Physical Society, and Optical Society of America. He has also pioneered interdisciplinary education through UARTS250 (Creative Process) and mentored underrepresented students via NSF REU/RET programs.
Scientific awards include:
- IEEE Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award (2020)
- Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award (2021)
- Raymond J. and Monica E. Schultz Outreach and Diversity Award
As principal investigator for USAID’s EHELD program, he rebuilt engineering education in Liberia, established optics programs in Ghana, and led AI-driven laser synchronization research under a $9M MURI grant (2025). His full professorship titles span Electrical Engineering, Physics, and multiple endowed chairs.
