Herbert H. Einstein is a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Department of Sustainable Materials & Infrastructure. His research focuses on rock mechanics, engineering geology, and underground construction, combining field measurements, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling. He has advised thirty-three Ph.D. students and authored/co-authored over 300 professional publications.
Education:
- Dipl.Bauing (1960), ETH-Zurich
- Dr.sc.tech (1966), ETH-Zurich
Research Interests: Mechanical properties of soils and rocks; analysis, design, and project management of underground structures; landslide risk analysis; probabilistic methods in rock engineering and engineering geology. His work bridges theoretical models with practical applications in infrastructure projects.
Scientific Awards:
- 2006 Outstanding Contributions to Rock Mechanics Award (ARMA)
- 1999 Müller Lecture Award (ISRM)
Teaching & Advising: Teaches courses in rock mechanics, engineering geology, and underground construction at MIT. Also delivers short courses globally. His group has produced 33 Ph.D. dissertations and pioneered advancements in rock engineering through interdisciplinary research.
Labs/Teams: Leads a research group at MIT focused on sustainable infrastructure and geotechnical engineering, emphasizing risk analysis and probabilistic methods.
