He holds a BA in French Literature from Brown University, a JD from UCLA School of Law (specializing in Critical Race Theory and Public Interest Law), and a PhD in Performance Studies from UC Berkeley (with a designated emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality).
His research explores intersections of queer, feminist, and disability studies with critical race theory, focusing on transnational discourses about state power and subjectivity. Yapp’s current book project investigates disability across law, arts, and humanities. He teaches courses on gender/queer theory, critical race theory, performance/dance studies, Marxism, law and aesthetics, and Asian American studies. Additionally, he is an artist with extensive dance performance and choreography experience, having worked with experimental companies in New York, San Francisco, and Taipei.
He serves as an associate editor of GLQ (curating the Queer Aesthetics section) and is part of the Social Text editorial collective.
