Henry Wright is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and Curator of Near Eastern Archaeology at the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology. His career spans decades of fieldwork in Mesopotamia, Madagascar, and China, focusing on the origins of primary states and early complex societies. He is affiliated with the Santa Fe Institute for the study of complex systems.
Research Interests: Wright’s work centers on the emergence of state administrations, urban economies, and regional interactions. His projects include excavations and surveys in Southern Iran, Eastern Syria, Madagascar, and Central China, integrating ecological, archaeological, and ethnohistorical perspectives.
Key Projects:
- Mesopotamia: Studied Early Uruk Period urban development (4000 BC) and regional dynamics in Syria and Turkey.
- Madagascar: Explored state formation processes in Imerina, collaborating with Malagasy colleagues and students, and established an island-wide archaeological framework.
- China: Participated in regional surveys at Erlitou, analyzing early state centers from 1800 BC to Zhou periods.
His theoretical contributions at the Santa Fe Institute emphasize multi-agent models to explain state formation, bridging empirical data and computational complexity.
