Henry Skerritt

Henry Skerritt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Curator of Research at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. His work bridges academic research and curatorial practice, focusing on Indigenous communities' agency in shaping their own art histories.

Skerritt’s research examines how Indigenous peoples engage with art institutions, emphasizing decolonization and self-representation. He has curated over 20 exhibitions, including Madayin: Eight Decades of Aboriginal Australian Bark Painting and Irrititja Kuwarri Tjungu, which highlight Aboriginal Australian art’s global significance.

His publications, such as the edited books Beyond Dreamings and Marking the Infinite, explore themes of cultural memory and contemporary Indigenous art practices. Skerritt’s academic work intersects with curatorial projects that prioritize Indigenous voices in art historiography.
