Dr Henry Maher is a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. His research focuses on post-Marxist and post-structuralist analyses of international political economy, particularly the persistence of neoliberal governance during crises and the historical evolution of neoliberal thought. He critically examines intersections between neoliberalism, Western civilisationism, and structural inequities rooted in race and gender hierarchies.
Key research areas include:
- Critical theory of neoliberalism’s ideological resilience
- Neoliberalism’s fascist tendencies and historical precursors
- Racialization of economic systems and migration discourse
- Western civilisation narratives in Australian political institutions
Recent publications analyze neoliberalism’s adaptability through psychoanalytic frameworks (Lacan’s discourse theory), its discursive survival mechanisms in crises, and its entanglement with far-right ideologies. His work frequently engages with Australian case studies, including corporate power dynamics in mining industries and the Ramsay Centre’s role in promoting white supremacist civilisation discourse.
He has been awarded the Wentworth Medal (2016) for outstanding academic writing. Maher has presented at major conferences including the Oceanic Conference on International Studies and the Historical Materialism Conference, focusing on topics like Lacanian critiques of neoliberalism and the genealogy of free-market ideologies.
