Henry L Dorn is an Assistant Professor of Music (Conducting and Composition) and Conductor of the St. Olaf Band at St. Olaf College. A nationally recognized composer and conductor, he creates storytelling-driven music exploring African American narratives through rhythmic innovation and syntactical versatility.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Music in Composition from The University of Memphis
- Master of Music in Composition and Wind Conducting from Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University
- Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Conducting and DMA in Composition from Michigan State University
Dr. Dorn's research focuses on immersive compositional storytelling rooted in African American experiences, with creative output spanning wind ensemble, orchestral, and chamber works. His compositions have been performed by elite ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, and JACK Quartet.

His pedagogical approach emphasizes transformative student-mentor interactions in both classroom and rehearsal settings, guided by mentors Kevin L. Sedatole (conducting) and David Biedenbender (composition).
