Henry Garfield is a Lecturer III in the Department of English at the University of Maine, Orono. He has held teaching positions at multiple institutions since 1995, including Eastern Maine Community College (2001–present) and Palomar Community College (1995–1999). His academic background includes a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Maine (2004), along with studies in Astronomy (San Diego State University), History and English (University of Maine at Orono), and English Composition (Beloit College).
His research interests blend creative writing with interdisciplinary themes, particularly astronomy and science fiction. Notable works include novels like My Father the Werewolf (2005) and essays published in San Diego Magazine, Down East, and the Los Angeles Times. He serves as a consulting editor for Bangor Metro magazine and is a member of the Planetary Society, reflecting his lifelong interest in astronomy.
Garfield teaches courses such as ENG 101 (College Composition), ENG 205 (Introduction to Creative Writing), and ENG 212 (Persuasive and Analytical Writing). His professional activities emphasize bridging literary creativity with scientific curiosity, as evidenced by his advocacy for writers engaging with STEM fields. He is currently exploring the potential of literary science fiction writing.
