Henry C.W. Laurence is a Professor of Government and Asian Studies at Bowdoin College, currently on leave for the 2025–2026 academic year. His primary affiliations include the Government and Legal Studies and Asian Studies departments. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (1996) and a BA from Oriel College, Oxford University (1985). Laurence's research focuses on media-politics intersections, press freedom dynamics in Britain, Japan, and the U.S., and comparative governance structures. He has held research positions at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (Oxford) and the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies (St. Antony's College, Oxford), alongside affiliations with the University of Tokyo and Harvard's U.S.-Japan Relations Program.
His notable works include The Politics of Public Broadcasting in Britain and Japan: the BBC and NHK Compared (2022) and Money Rules: The New Politics of Finance in Britain and Japan (2001). His recent publications analyze Brexit's political implications, post-Abe Japan's media landscape, and digital television policy transitions. He frequently engages in public discourse via media outlets like the National Interest, Portland Press Herald, and NPR.
Laurence teaches courses on British politics, global media systems, and international political economy. His research consistently bridges empirical analysis with policy-oriented insights, emphasizing cross-cultural comparisons and institutional accountability mechanisms.
