Dr. Henrik Ernstson is Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Manchester and Honorary Associate Professor at the African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town. He holds a PhD in Systems Ecology from Stockholm University, with postdoctoral experience at Stanford University and UCT. His research develops a situated approach to urban political ecology, blending critical geography, STS, and film-based methodologies to analyze southern urbanism.
His work examines urban natures, infrastructure politics, and environmental justice in cities like Cape Town, New Orleans, and Luanda. Key themes include postcolonial knowledge production, social movements, and the role of art-science collaborations in environmental politics.
Recent publications focus on labor in Angolan urbanization, oral histories of infrastructure, and visual environmental humanities. His films (e.g., One Table Two Elephants) engage race-nature intersections in postcolonial contexts. Articles demonstrate consistent commitment to decolonial methodologies and Southern urban theory.
He has supervised 3 PhD students and 7 postdoctoral fellows on topics including coastal ecosystems and waste politics. Major grants include the AXA Research Award (€250k) for GROWL, a project examining urban infrastructures in African cities.
