Dr. Henriette Louwerse is a Senior Lecturer in Dutch and Director of Studies at the School of Languages, Arts and Societies, University of Sheffield. She also serves as Director of the Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies. Born in the Netherlands, she completed her English Language and Literature studies at the University of Groningen and earned her PhD from the University of Hull in 2007, focusing on multiculturalism in contemporary Dutch literature through the works of Hafid Bouazza. She received the prestigious Harting Scholarship during her postgraduate studies.
Her research explores:
- Migration literature and multicultural identity formation
- Colonial legacies in Dutch national narratives
- Language policy and Dutch as a global language
- Postcolonial reinterpretations of Dutch cultural history
- Metamorphosis as literary motif in migrant writing
Her publications consistently address Dutch postcolonial identity, multicultural discourse, and literary analysis of authors like Hafid Bouazza. Recent work shows increased focus on language policy and decolonial frameworks.

She co-supervised PhD candidate Cyd Sturgess researching lesbian identity constructions in German/Dutch cultures. As Director of Dutch Studies, she coordinates:

- Integrated cultural initiatives through the Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies
