- Research Networks: SMULA, Baltic Sea sediment collaborations
Dedicated to water purification research, Djerf studies wetland functions in mitigating water browning caused by dissolved organic carbon (DOC). His work explores technical solutions like ozonation and filter materials, while investigating nutrient recycling mechanisms for agricultural reuse of nitrogen and phosphorus.
Recent research output shows sustained activity since 2012, with a 2025 focus on PFAS remediation using Salix species and DOC mitigation in forested streams. His 2022-2025 projects include mesocosm studies for engineered wetland validation and Baltic Sea sediment reoxygenation experiments.
Key research areas include:
- Wetland engineering for water quality improvement
- Acid sulfate soil impacts on aquatic ecosystems
- Metal mobilization in anoxic environments
- Sustainable nutrient cycling
- Climate change adaptation strategies
Djerf actively contributes to environmental monitoring through field studies (Arkelstorp Bay, Kristianstad Vattenrike), lab experiments, and theoretical frameworks connecting wetland management with UN Sustainable Development Goals. His recent conference presentations highlight practical applications of wetland solutions to contemporary water quality challenges.
