- Former Spokesperson of the Automata and Formal Languages Section (2015-2022)
- Former member of the Center for Teacher Education (until 2022)
- Former member of the representative body for severely disabled people (until 2014)
His research centers on Theoretical Computer Science with specialized expertise in Automata Theory, Formal Languages, and Data Compression. He maintains extensive publications focusing on algorithmic analysis, including approximation algorithms and learning algorithms, with resources available through his BibTeX repository and CV.
Prof. Fernau demonstrates exceptional scientific engagement through leadership roles as Editor-in-Chief for Algorithms (2014-2019) and Acta Informatica (since 2022), alongside service on editorial boards for six major journals. His conference involvement spans over 40 program committees including ICGI, STACS, and SOFSEM (as Co-Chair for SOFSEM 2024), plus steering committee positions for ICGI, IPEC, STACS, IWOCA, and SOFSEM.
In teaching, he delivers core courses including Automata Theory and Formal Languages, Data Compression, and Formal Languages A, emphasizing hands-on algorithm implementation.
