Prof. Henk Haagsman is a Professor in the Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on molecular host defense mechanisms, particularly innate immune responses against pathogens in animals and humans. He leads the Molecular Host Defence group, investigating host defense molecules like collectins and antimicrobial peptides, which play critical roles in mucosal immunity.
His work addresses how these molecules inhibit pathogen dissemination, modulate immune responses, and directly kill microbes. Key research themes include structure-function relationships of host defense proteins, development of anti-infectives, and improving farm animal immunity. Recent studies explore antimicrobial peptides' dual roles in pathogen clearance and immunomodulation, with applications in vaccine adjuvants and alternatives to antibiotics.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary collaborations, examining mechanisms in avian, porcine, and bacterial models. Research outcomes aim to advance therapies for infectious diseases and reduce antibiotic reliance in veterinary settings.
