Professor Hendrik Maier specializes in Southeast Asian and Indonesian literature at the University of California, Riverside. His research examines Malay writing traditions, colonial literary production, and historical print cultures across the region. Current projects investigate the conceptual evolution of 'literature' in Southeast Asia and textual networks linking regional literary traditions.
As Director of SEATRiP (Southeast Asian Text, Ritual, and Performance program), he promotes interdisciplinary approaches to cultural studies. Scholarly contributions include critical editions of Malay texts and analyses of literary interactions between indigenous traditions and colonial influences. Teaching encompasses historical and modern literatures of Indonesia and Malaysia.
