Harry Aveling is a Professor at Monash University (affiliated with the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics), specialising in Indonesian and Malay Literature, Translation Studies, and Southeast Asian Literary Traditions. He holds a PhD in Malay Literature from the National University of Singapore and has taught extensively across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Aveling is renowned for his extensive translation work, including seminal works like Secrets Need Words: Indonesian Poetry 1966-1998 and Saint Rosa: Selected Verse of Dorothea Rosa Herliany, which earned him the Khatulistiwa Prize for Poetry (2006). His research focuses on figures like Singapore’s Isa Kamari and the Malay literary epic traditions.

His recent work examines Singaporean author Isa Kamari’s portrayal of Islamic identity in contemporary literature.
