معرفی
Dr. Hem Raj Sharma is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool, Faculty of Science and Engineering. Born in Baglung, Nepal, he has overcome significant challenges to become an internationally recognized researcher in condensed matter physics. His journey from a remote mountainous village without basic facilities to a leading academic position exemplifies his dedication and perseverance.
Dr. Sharma's research focuses on the atomic-scale characterization of complex metallic alloys and quasicrystals. His work has important implications for nanoscale science, thin film growths, catalysis, and corrosion resistance. He leads the Quasicrystal Research Group and employs advanced surface science techniques including scanning tunnelling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy.
- PhD in Physics, Free University Berlin, Germany (1999-2002)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Condensed Matter Physics, International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy (1998-1999)
- Master Course in Atomic Physics, Rikkyo University, Tokyo, Japan (1997-1998)
- M.Sc. in Physics, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal (1995-1997)
Dr. Sharma's research has evolved from fundamental studies of quasicrystal surfaces to exploring potential technological applications. His recent work focuses on realizing multiscale quasicrystalline structures using additive manufacturing techniques in collaboration with engineering research groups. This interdisciplinary approach aims to bridge the gap between fundamental understanding and industrial applications of materials with unconventional crystallographic symmetries.
His extensive international collaborations include research groups from Japan, France, and across Europe. He has published numerous high-impact papers and presented his work at major international conferences.
Scientific Awards and Honors
- Visiting Fellow and Global Lecturer, Tokyo University of Science, Japan (2023)
- Youth Inspiration Award, Youth Parliament Nepal (2018)
- Nepal Bhushan Medal, awarded by the Honorable President of Nepal (2016)
- GOLD MEDAL, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal (1998)
Dr. Sharma has successfully secured research funding including an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2007) and a JSPS Invitation Fellowship (2013). His research group benefits from membership in the European Integrated Centre for the Development of New Metallic Alloys and Compounds (ECMetAC), providing access to specialized experimental facilities.
He actively mentors PhD and undergraduate students from the UK, EU, and worldwide, fostering an international research environment based on mutual respect and high academic standards. His teaching responsibilities include Condensed Matter Physics (PHYS363) and other advanced physics modules.
