Associate Professor Helmut Schaider is affiliated with the University of Queensland, where he holds a position in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences and is based at the Frazer Institute. His academic focus spans melanoma biology, cancer drug resistance, and skin cancer chemoprevention.
- Bachelor of Medicine, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
- Certificate of Dermatology, Australasian College of Dermatologists
His research integrates epigenetics and calcium signaling to understand adaptive resistance in melanoma, with recent work on O-GlcNAc transferase and HOX gene methylation in skin cancer. Publications highlight novel therapeutic strategies targeting molecular pathways in drug-tolerant subpopulations and transplant recipient oncology. Current grants include NHMRC IDEAS Grants and Australasian College of Dermatologists funding.
Key collaborative projects involve 3D imaging technologies for actinic damage monitoring and high-plex spatial profiling for biomarker identification in cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas. He actively supervises students in areas like melanoma proteomics and epigenetic modifications, working with multidisciplinary teams including Professor Nikolas Haass and Professor Brian Gabrielli.
