Helmut Hofer is a Distinguished Mathematician and Hermann Weyl Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study since 2019. Previously, he held prestigious positions at institutions including Courant Institute (New York University), ETH Zurich, and Rutgers University. His research spans Symplectic Geometry, Topology, and Dynamical Systems, with foundational work in Partial Differential Equations and applications to Hamiltonian mechanics.
- Education: Diplom (1979) and Ph.D. (1981) from the University of Zurich.
His contributions to mathematics are recognized through memberships in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2020), National Academy of Sciences (2008), and Academia Europaea (2008), alongside the Ostrowski Prize (1999) and Heinz Hopf Prize (2013). He has advised numerous Ph.D. students and contributed to major conferences and editorial boards, including Communications in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Inventiones Mathematicae.
