Leonid Polterovich is a Professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Tel Aviv University, where he has been faculty since 1990 and holds the Gordon Chair in Dynamical Systems and Symplectic Topology since 2003. He maintains a part-time visiting position at the University of Chicago following his tenure there from 2009-2012, and previously held a sabbatical at ETH Zurich (1997-1998).
His educational background includes studies in Sinai's and Arnold's seminars at Moscow State University. His research focuses on symplectic and contact geometry and topology, providing geometric language for problems of classical and quantum mechanics. Polterovich's work includes sharp results on symplectic packings (with McDuff), triviality of local Lagrangian knots (with Eliashberg), contact non-squeezing theorem (with Eliashberg and Kim), and the development of Polterovich surgery on Lagrangian submanifolds. He has advanced Hofer's geometry on Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and discovered a partial order structure on contact transformations (with Eliashberg).
- European Mathematical Society Prize (1996)
- Erdös Prize (1998)
- Michael Bruno Memorial Award (2003)
- ERC Advanced Grant (2013-2019)
- Plenary lecture at ECM 2016
Polterovich serves as Chair of the Scientific Committee for the 9th European Congress of Mathematics (ECM 2024) and is coeditor-in-chief of Geometric and Functional Analysis (GAFA). He was elected to the Academy of Europe in 2024, reflecting his standing in the international mathematical community.
