Helene Castenbrandt is an Associate Professor at Lund University, affiliated with the Department of Economic History, Centre for Economic Demography, and Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities (BRCMH). Her research bridges medical history, demographic changes, and population history, with a current focus on the historical development of long-term sickness absence systems in Sweden during the 20th century.

Her recent research explores how social welfare systems and health insurance policies evolved alongside epidemiological transitions and workforce dynamics. Projects include Klimatkylning från vulkaniska superutbrott (climate impacts of volcanic eruptions) and NORDEMICS: Pathogens and Pandemics. She supervises doctoral research on early-life conditions and later health outcomes.
Castenbrandt’s publications span topics from cholera quarantine systems to digital archival practices. She actively participates in conferences on health history and contributes to SDGs through work on healthcare equity and epidemiological transitions. Current teaching includes courses on economic history and writing skills.
