Helena Vasconcelos serves as a Senior Researcher at INESC TEC's Power and Energy Systems Centre and holds an Assistant Professor position at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). With over 25 years of continuous service since January 1, 1999, she has established herself as a specialist in power system security analysis with particular expertise in high-renewable penetration scenarios.
Her research primarily focuses on dynamic behavior studies and security operation analysis of power systems, with significant contributions in applying machine learning techniques to optimize grid stability. She specializes in challenges facing islanded power systems and frequency control mechanisms as renewable energy penetration increases across European power grids, with particular attention to hydropower flexibility solutions and uncertainty modeling.
Dr. Vasconcelos has supervised multiple Master's students through thesis research at both the University of Porto and University of Minho, with topics ranging from PV fluctuation mitigation to post-contingency overload assessment in interconnected electrical systems. Her academic guidance has directly supported research addressing real-world power system challenges faced by transmission system operators.
As a key member of INESC TEC's Power and Energy Systems Centre, she collaborates with an international research team working on cutting-edge solutions for the European energy transition, with recent projects including XFLEX HYDRO and iTesla framework development for security assessment under renewable forecast uncertainties.
