Helena Malikova is a Research Fellow at the Hertie School and currently serves as a European Union civil servant in the Directorate General for Competition (DG COMP) at the European Commission. She leads the Chief Economist Team’s effort to establish financial data analysis capabilities, enhancing theoretical economic expertise. Her work spans competition policy, state aid investigations into multinational tax practices, and crisis management, including EU bank bailouts during the financial crisis and pandemic-related aviation sector support.
Professional Background: Prior to her current role, she worked on restructuring European banks in Germany and the Netherlands, analyzed aviation sector bailouts during the pandemic, and participated in antitrust inspections (e.g., e-books, pharmaceuticals). She began her career as a Foreign Exchange (FX) trader at Société Générale and Credit Suisse, holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, and earned a Master’s in Economics from the College of Europe in Bruges. She also served as an EU Fellow at the University of Berkeley, California.
