Helen Yitah is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Columbia University (2024-25). She previously served as Dean of the School of Languages at the University of Ghana, where she taught for over two decades. Her research focuses on gender identity, West African feminist theory, women’s literary traditions, and children’s literature in Africa.
Research interests include cultural history, gender studies, and postcolonial perspectives, with a particular emphasis on African and diasporic literatures. Her work bridges literary analysis with sociopolitical contexts, examining themes of identity, colonialism, and cultural heritage.
Recent publications explore postcolonial humanities frameworks, radio’s role in African creative writing, and anthologizing poetry by Ghanaian feminist icon Ama Ata Aidoo. These works reflect her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and amplifying marginalized voices in literary discourse.
