Helen Wheeler is an Associate Professor in Life Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University's Faculty of Science and Engineering, specializing in wildlife and ecosystem ecology with a focus on northern, alpine, and arctic environments. She joined ARU in January 2018 as a Lecturer in Zoology and was promoted to Associate Professor. Her research is interdisciplinary, exploring both ecological and social aspects of wildlife and ecosystem change, with particular emphasis on climate change impacts in the Arctic.
Dr. Wheeler co-leads ARU's Wildlife Change in the Arctic project and serves as UK PI for the £553,491 International Research Project 'Beavers and socio-ecological resilience in Inuit Nunangat' (2022-2025). She is a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Transformative Change Assessment, demonstrating her significant contribution to international environmental policy.
Her research interests span climate change impacts on wildlife, socio-ecological resilience, integration of Indigenous knowledge with scientific approaches, and ecosystem restoration and rewilding. She is particularly interested in how rapid climatic, ecological, and socio-economic changes in the Arctic affect wildlife behavior, population ecology, spatial distributions, and species interactions.
Dr. Wheeler's publication record reveals a strong focus on Arctic ecology, climate change impacts, and the integration of multiple knowledge systems in environmental decision-making. Her recent work increasingly examines the social dimensions of ecological change, particularly how restoration and rewilding initiatives are perceived by stakeholders like farmers in England.

Dr. Wheeler actively supervises PhD students and welcomes research inquiries in her areas of expertise. She has secured multiple research grants totaling over £600,000 from UKRI, Canadian funding bodies, and other international sources. Her fieldwork and research collaborations span multiple Arctic nations, including Norway, Canada, and Denmark. She is a member of both the Applied Ecology Research Group and Behavioural Ecology Research Group at ARU and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs in animal behavior, ecology, conservation, and zoology.
