Professor Helen Tremlett is a leading researcher in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, specializing in Neuroepidemiology and Multiple Sclerosis within the Division of Neurology. She previously held the prestigious Canada Research Chair in Neuroepidemiology and Multiple Sclerosis from 2011 to 2021 and directs the Tremlett Laboratory and Epidemiology in Multiple Sclerosis research program.
- PhD in Pharmacoepidemiology and Multiple Sclerosis from Cardiff University, UK
Her research focuses on multiple sclerosis prodrome, drug safety and effectiveness, pharmacogenomics, comorbidities, and gut microbiome interactions. She investigates healthcare utilization patterns preceding MS diagnosis, risk factors in special populations, and long-term treatment outcomes using large health administrative databases. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to improve treatment options and outcomes for MS patients.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2023-2025) reveals dominant trends in prodromal phase research (40% of articles), pediatric MS epidemiology (25%), advanced statistical methodologies (20%), and gut microbiome interactions (15%). Her work increasingly utilizes multichannel sequence analysis and high-dimensional propensity scoring to address confounding in real-world data.
- Canada Research Chair in Neuroepidemiology and Multiple Sclerosis (2011-2021)
Dr. Tremlett has secured major funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), MS Society of Canada, MS Scientific Research Foundation, and US National MS Society. Her trainee program has mentored over 18 students including Floriane Calocer, Jonas Graf, and Himali Bergeron-Vitez, with alumni now leading research at institutions worldwide. Current projects include international collaborations on pediatric MS networks and drug safety studies through the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network.
The Tremlett Lab maintains a diverse, interdisciplinary team collaborating with national and international partners including the Centre for Brain Health and Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging. Their current focus includes the PRoMS (Pediatric Risk of Multiple Sclerosis) study examining gut microbiome profiles in children with MS versus healthy controls, and investigations into how human genes influence drug adverse effects in MS treatment.
